Preserving Cultural Heritage through Immersive Technologies: A New Frontier for Museums

Abstract :
Immersive technologies are transforming the museum sector. Virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality offer new ways to preserve and present cultural heritage. This paper examines the applications, benefits, and challenges of these tools in museum contexts. It analyses three significant case studies: the British Museum's augmented reality experience, the National Museum of Korea's virtual reality tour, and the Anne Frank House's mixed reality installation. Findings indicate measurable improvements in visitor engagement, information retention, and historical empathy. However, significant barriers persist. These include financial constraints, the digital divide, authenticity concerns, technical obsolescence, and ethical dilemmas regarding representation and consent. The paper proposes a four-pillar framework for responsible implementation: community-centric design, pedagogical clarity, technical sustainability, and authenticity disclosure. Emerging trends such as artificial intelligence, haptic technology, and adaptive personalisation point toward an integrated future. The conclusion argues that immersive technologies should complement rather than replace traditional preservation methods. They extend museum reach and deepen visitor understanding. But they must be deployed ethically and inclusively. The goal is not to choose between physical and digital heritage but to integrate both meaningfully. This integration represents a new frontier for museums. It is one filled with promise and responsibility.
